great website, thanks for all the paleo friendly ideas.
I have a question with regards to organic meat versus free range and grassfed meat.
Could you explain what the differences are and whether you would recommend organic meat or grassfed meat ?
Hi there Isabella!
Thanks for your question, it’s a really good one and it's actually rather more complicated than you might think!
My personal recommendation would be to buy grass fed organic meat whenever possible. Having said that, if you know your farmer and find that he rears his animals in as natural a way as possible, and that his farming practices align with your personal ethics (even if they don’t come with official certification) then I would (and do) choose that meat over something from the supermarket that is wearing the right labels!
The problem is that there is not yet an international standard when it comes to organic farming and so the rules and regulations around organic classification seem to vary somewhat from country to country. The good news is that there is an organisation that is working to create an such a standard. The organisation is called IFOAM and it was responsible for GMOs being excluded from organic farming, so their work is very influential, and they are having a big impact on organic standards around the world, they're just not quite all the way there, yet!
From what I can gather, the organic meat produce market in France is rather good so you should be able to find a decent supply locally, but just check with whatever the French organic organisation is to see precisely what organic meat means in France - the same goes for whatever country you are buying your meat from.
I want to go into more detail about the benefits of grass fed meat and the differences between free range/outdoor bred/outdoor reared, but this reply is already quite long, so I’m going to create a new page on the site which will give you lots more information to help you make an informed choice when buying meat.
Hope this helps
